Hi, I started breeding and painting birds 67 years ago, my first pair of birds were a pair of blue and white border canaries, a little gem they were called in those days. From that day on I was hooked on birds, I could not wait for the breeding season to get started, in the meantime although a junior I was one of the founder members of the local cage bird society, I was like a cat on hot bricks and could not wait for things to get moving, at that moment in time I had no idea about breeding birds or being a part of a bird club.
Time moved on and my first breeding season was at my feet, the nest pans were hung making sure that antimite was under the felt liners, the birds had all the tit bits to help bring them into condition, such as chickweed, egg food, wheatgerm oil, the birds appeared to be in good condition, but the season was not good to me, I wondered what I had done wrong, but no I had done nothing wrong, this was the real life of breeding birds, we blame the weather for lots of things, the lack of this, and the lack of that.
Breeding birds can be so rewarding and yet at the same time can be so heart breaking. Come on let’s talk birds.
